On Tuesday Nov. 18 2008, my local community radio station had Dr. Robert C. Balling Jr., a Heartland speaker, on to talk with listeners about global warming.
I called in.
(I’ve also done several posts about his appearance on my blog.)
Take-home messages: callers would do well to be better prepared, and guests would do well not to lose their cool.
Oh, and one more thing – he doesn’t like your blog.
He’s on Heartland’s list of speakers, which is how the KVMR folks selected him; he used to be a denier, but now says he’s not, he now believes that the earth has been warming for 30 years and that the ‘fingerprints’ indicate it’s at least partly anthropogenic. (I’d missed his introductory talk (containing this info) while googling for his background, so we had a bit of a disconnect, in our dialogue.)
I wish I’d asked him when he’d changed his mind;
presumably recently, since* most of his talking points were still supportive of denialism (talking about “the skeptics” being an enormous group, granting them credibility, etc).
Not surprisingly, he did still argue for inaction; and he used a rather deft argument: it’s going to be a huge, expensive problem to address, plus there’s China, so why not spend our money & effort on environmental problems in our back yard instead, that’ll be much cheaper and where we can see results…
(Note: This has a superficial appeal – rather like repainting your bedroom when the house is on fire. * )
I asked afterwards, via email, how much of his income comes from his Heartland-and-other-orgs’ affiliations, speaking fees, etc, and who paid him to do our call-in. No answer; sent 2nd email just asking about payment for KVMR and the like, & he replied saying he is not paid for his radio and TV appearances.
Note: if you’d like to comment, and part of your comment is “global warming’s not happening and/or alarmists are pushing it”, I’ve set up a separate thread for this –please respond in the comments here.
